Friuli is located in Italy's northwestern corner. It borders Austria and Slovenia and features both mountains and a (small) coast. Its cuisine is an amalgamation of northern Italian and Austro-Hungarian flavors and traditions. Main dishes are usually eaten with polenta, but ingredients such as mustard, paprika and horseradish show up frequently.

Austrian strudels, called strucolos, are traditional desserts – though I was too intimidated to try to make one.

The dishes I made fit the flavor profile of things I like and they were pretty succesful. The goulash, in particular, was wonderful.
