Afrikaans cuisine has Dutch, French and Indian influences and relies heavily on local products. Among its most distinct dishes are barbecued meats, stews and meatloafs. I cooked some related dishes when I explored Cape Malay cuisine a few years ago.
I'm not sure why I skipped Afrikaans cuisine back when I started this project seventeen years ago, but as I'm catching up with the cuisines I skipped by cooking a single recipe. In this case, I decided on milk tart as this pie is both easy to make and ubiquitous in South Africa. It was a good choice.
