{"id":1779,"date":"2019-02-19T12:52:55","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T04:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/?p=1779"},"modified":"2019-02-19T12:52:55","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T04:52:55","slug":"meal-kit-reviews-purple-carrot-is-a-total-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/2019\/02\/meal-kit-reviews-purple-carrot-is-a-total-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Meal Kit Reviews: Purple Carrot Is a Total Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a vegan daughter, so in my journey to try all meal kit companies, I decided to give Purple Carrot a try.\u00a0 It was a total disaster.\u00a0 She did not like any of the three meals she got, and ended up not eating more than a few bites from each.\u00a0 This is a child (well, teen) who realizes that since she adopted a vegan diet, she does not get to be picky on what she eats &#8211; but Purple Carrot failed to meet even her very low standards.<\/p>\n<p>In all, I cooked three meals in one week.\u00a0 I got a $30-off your first week deal, so I ended up paying $42 for this box ($14 per kit or $7 per portion).\u00a0 Money very badly spent as most of the food went to waste, even the dog wouldn&#8217;t eat it.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Plans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you subscribe to Purple Carrot you will get a weekly box with three 2-serving meal kits, for $72.\u00a0 You can choose a so-called &#8220;plan,&#8221; high protein, quick &amp; easy or chef&#8217;s choice, but that only determines which meals you will get sent by default if you don&#8217;t make choices in a given week.\u00a0 Shipping is free.<br \/><br \/>Purple Carrot also sells a variety of breakfast and lunch kits that you can add to your order.<br \/><br \/><strong>The Food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Purple Carrots offers six vegan meal choices a week.\u00a0 \u00a0Proteins are usually tofu, tempeh, beans or legumes.\u00a0 My daughter is a big fan of &#8220;fake&#8221; meats &#8211; in particular fake chicken -, so she wasn&#8217;t thrilled that these were not offered.\u00a0 \u00a0The recipes are modern and sound like the sort of things you would get at a mid-priced restaurant here in California.\u00a0 As you could expect, there is an emphasis on vegetables and whole grains, and many of the recipes have Mediterranean, Mexican and Asian influences.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1607-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1934\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1607-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1607-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1607-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"977\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1595-e1550482387415-1024x977.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1595-e1550482387415-1024x977.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1595-e1550482387415-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1595-e1550482387415-768x733.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1595-e1550482387415.jpg 1574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The ingredients were mostly fresh and of good quality, but the garlic came damaged, as you can see.  I&#8217;ve never seen garlic turn this way, so I&#8217;m not totally sure what happened to it. Unfortunately, not a particularly well sealed cardboard box.  Fortunately, all the contents were fine (save for the garlic).<br><br>Inside there were recipe cards, and the ingredients, with freezer packs at the bottom.  Everything was crisp.  I don&#8217;t believe the lining was recyclable but I&#8217;m not sure. To my daughter, the zucchini noodles looked so much like pasta that she was expecting them to eat and feel like pasta &#8211; the strange texture threw her off and not in a pleasant way.  She also disliked the texture of the &#8220;meatballs&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1625-e1550551206842-1024x738.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1937\" width=\"311\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1625-e1550551206842-1024x738.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1625-e1550551206842-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1625-e1550551206842-768x554.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG-1625-e1550551206842.jpg 1814w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplecarrot.com\/plant-based-recipes\/za-atar-tofu-with-mediterranean-quinoa-pilaf-romesco-sauce\">Za&#8217;atar Tofu with Mediterranean Quinoa Pilaf &amp; Romesco Sauce<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, this dish suffered from being tasteless.
