{"id":1225,"date":"2012-01-24T11:29:05","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T03:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/?p=1225"},"modified":"2012-01-24T11:29:05","modified_gmt":"2012-01-24T03:29:05","slug":"san-leandro-restaurants-closings-changes-and-openings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/2012\/01\/san-leandro-restaurants-closings-changes-and-openings\/","title":{"rendered":"San Leandro Restaurants &#8211; closings, changes and openings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is just an update on what&#8217;s going on in San Leandro&#8217;s dismal restaurant &#8220;scene&#8221;.\u00a0 Please comment if you have any more info.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smilingjackstation.com.\">Smiling Jack Station<\/a><\/strong> is a new Filipino restaurant at the old Straw Hat location on Washington Ave.\u00a0 In addition to Filipino favorites, it offers boiled and fried seafood, BBQ and burgers.\u00a0 They have a banquet room and karaoke and dancing on weekend nights.\u00a0 There is a $5 off $25 coupon on their website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/dicks.html\">Dick&#8217;s Restaurant and Lounge<\/a><\/strong> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebpublishing.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=2335:dicks-restaurant-under-new-ownership-&amp;catid=45:business-mainmenu-29&amp;Itemid=126\">changed ownership<\/a>.\u00a0 The owners are keeping the name and apparently, most of the menu.\u00a0 Even the chef will be staying transitionally.\u00a0 One change: they&#8217;re adding TVs both to the dining room and lounge.\u00a0 Alas, that, to me, is a reason *not* to go.\u00a0 If you need a TV to distract you from what you&#8217;re eating, that says quite a bit about the quality of the food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marga.org\/foodblog\/2011\/02\/harleys-or-jds-burgers-mexican-food-san-leandro-ca-review\/\">Harley&#8217;s \/ JD&#8217;s Burgers<\/a><\/strong>, you know, the restaurant on Washington and Marina that looks like it used to be a drive-in restaurant, has a new name.\u00a0 Maybe it means it&#8217;s changed ownerships. Hopefully it means the food won&#8217;t be as atrocious and expensive.\u00a0 Unless I hear lots of good reviews, I probably won&#8217;t give it a try, though<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/bella2.html\">La Bella Italia<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 The placed turned into a Mexican restaurant some time ago, but it doesn&#8217;t seem to have lasted much as that, and now it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trulia.com\/property\/3072659615-15015-E-14th-St-San-Leandro-CA-94578\">up for sale<\/a>.\u00a0 I hope someone with some vision &#8211; and a good cook &#8211; buys it.\u00a0 Really, I would LOVE it if someone would turn it into a modern-day <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/prings.html\">Pring&#8217;s<\/a>.\u00a0 Find the old menu, get a great chef, and give it a try! I&#8217;d go for sure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/nicks.html\">Nick&#8217;s Family Restaurant<\/a><\/strong> has been remodeled. I haven&#8217;t been back but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/nicks-family-restaurant-san-leandro\">reviews on Yelp<\/a> are very mixed vis a vis the food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moncafecoffee.com\/\"><strong>Mon Caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> in the Manor seems to be for sale.\u00a0 Or at least I think this <a href=\"http:\/\/us.businessesforsale.com\/us\/Coffee-Cafe-In-Neighborhood-Shopping-Center-San-Leandro-For-Sale.aspx\">for sale ad<\/a> fits Mon Caf\u00e9 the best.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/newchina.html\"><strong>New China Buffet<\/strong><\/a> is also for sale (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loopnet.com\/xNet\/MainSite\/Listing\/Profile\/Profile.aspx?LID=17454169&amp;AID=BeI0wBg1w&amp;FromLocation=&amp;NoBrandingView=true&amp;fname=Benhui&amp;lname=Dai&amp;17454169=D1z5MZU5Q&amp;PgCxtCurFLKey=&amp;ProfileFromLocation=professionalprofile&amp;PgCxtGuid=da0a1236-2c02-4446-86ea-031c9c41f99d&amp;PgCxtFLKey=&amp;PgCxtCurFLKey=&amp;PgCxtDir=Down\">here)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/ploughmans.html\">Ploughmans<\/a><\/strong> is up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loopnet.com\/Listing\/17433800\/1600-Washington-Ave-San-Leandro-CA\/\">for sale<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure some people will be sad, but I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;ll be that great a loss.\u00a0 San Leandro does need a good breakfast place, hopefully whoever buys it will turn it into one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/vilacereja.html\"><strong>Vila Cereja<\/strong><\/a> is *still* up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loopnet.com\/Listing\/17172491\/1041-1051-Macarthur-Blvd-San-Leandro-CA\/\">for sale<\/a>.\u00a0 That place has so much potential! I wish San Leandro&#8217;s Business Development department would actually do something useful for once and entice a San Francisco restaurant to open a second branch here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marga.org\/food\/rest\/vos.html\">Vo&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>, that stylish Vietnamese bistro on Parrot has closed down and another Vietnamese restaurant (<strong>Song Huong<\/strong>) has opened in its place.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not surprised that Vo&#8217;s didn&#8217;t make it.\u00a0 They had pretty good food, but it was very overpriced, even when using restaurant.com coupons.
