This restaurant has closed. A new restaurant, Sahib, has re-opened at the same place

Shan is one of two-Indian restaurants in Alameda. After having visited the other one, Indian Palace, in a many occasions, we decided to give Shan a chance. Reviews of the restaurant at dine.com where very positive, so we were expecting a great dining experience. Instead, we got a pretty bad one.

We visited the restaurant a Saturday night at 8 PM, in August 2000. The restaurant was deserted. There were no other patrons dining there, and no one came during our whole stay. By the end of the meal, we were not surprised at the lack of patrons, Indian Palace is very close and much better.

The restaurant occupies one large room, and has an OK, if indistinct, feel to it. Service was fine, though nothing special: they came, took the order, brought the food, took the dirty dishes away, and that was about it.

The food, however, is what disappointed us. We had ordered some of our favorite dishes (chicken pakora, keema nan, chicken tika masala and lamb korma) and they just tasted flat and uninteresting. They didn't taste bad, but they gave no compelling reason (other than placating hunger) for eating them.

On the plus side, food here is pretty cheap. Most entrees are about $7.50-$8 a la carte (this includes rice) and Thali dinners are about $3 more.

We are not planning on going back.
